IMPORTANT NOTE:
The Kothaligad Trek, popularly known as Peth Fort, is one of the most scenic and accessible treks in the Sahyadri mountain range. Located near Karjat, this fort is a favourite among trekkers who enjoy peaceful trails, moderate climbs, and rewarding views without extreme difficulty. The trek gets its unique identity from the cave carved at the top of the hill, which resembles a chimney-like structure and adds a distinctive character to the fort.
Adventure Awaits curates the Kothaligad Trek for trekkers looking for a relaxed yet fulfilling outdoor experience. Whether you are new to trekking or looking for a short nature escape, Kothaligad offers a memorable journey through the Western Ghats.
Kothaligad is popular because it offers everything a beginner trek should—manageable distance, scenic surroundings, and a sense of achievement. Its proximity to Karjat makes it easily accessible from Mumbai and Pune, making it a preferred weekend trek.
Another reason for its popularity is its monsoon appeal. During the rainy season, the fort is surrounded by greenery, low clouds, and small waterfalls, creating a refreshing trekking environment that attracts nature lovers and photographers.
The trek begins from Peth village, the base village for Kothaligad. The initial section of the trail passes through village paths and forested areas, offering a calm and gradual start to the climb.
As you gain altitude, the trail becomes slightly rocky but remains well-defined. The final ascent leads to the summit plateau, where the iconic cave structure is located. The climb inside the cave is optional and requires caution due to narrow steps.
The summit offers ample space to rest and enjoy the surrounding views before starting the descent.
The most unique feature of Kothaligad is the cave carved at the top of the hill. This vertical cave structure has steps carved inside, leading trekkers upward within the rock itself. While the climb is short, it adds an adventurous element to the trek.
Trekkers who prefer not to climb inside the cave can still enjoy the summit views from outside, making the trek flexible for different comfort levels.
From the top of Kothaligad, trekkers are rewarded with panoramic views of the Sahyadri ranges. On clear days, the Bhimashankar range, Morbe Dam, and surrounding hills are clearly visible.
During the monsoon, the summit is often surrounded by mist and clouds, creating a serene and dramatic atmosphere. Winter brings clearer visibility and pleasant weather, ideal for longer breaks at the top.
Kothaligad dates back to the Maratha period and was used as a watchtower to monitor trade routes passing through the region. Although the fort does not have extensive fortifications, remnants of old structures and the unique cave reflect its historical role.
The simplicity of the fort allows trekkers to focus more on the natural surroundings and peaceful environment.
Kothaligad can be trekked for most of the year, but the experience varies by season.
Monsoon from June to September is the most popular season, with lush greenery and cool weather. Trails can be slippery, so proper footwear is essential.
Winter from October to February offers dry trails, clear views, and comfortable temperatures, making it ideal for beginners.
Summer from March to May is suitable for early morning treks, but hydration is important due to rising temperatures.
Kothaligad does not require high fitness levels. Regular walking and basic stamina are sufficient to complete the trek comfortably.
Wearing trekking shoes with good grip, carrying enough water, and dressing according to the weather ensure a smooth trekking experience.
The trek is generally safe when done with basic precautions. Care should be taken near rocky patches and inside the cave section.
Adventure Awaits ensures trained trek leaders, group coordination, and first-aid readiness, making the trek safe and enjoyable for all participants.
Trekkers are encouraged to follow Leave No Trace principles. Avoid littering, stay on designated trails, and respect local villages and wildlife.
