Kedarkantha has earned its popularity because it delivers everything trekkers expect from the Himalayas without overwhelming difficulty. Snow-covered trails, clear summit views, and well-defined routes make it a reliable choice for winter trekking.
Another major reason for its popularity is accessibility. The base village, Sankri, is well-connected by road, making travel relatively simple compared to other Himalayan treks. Combined with short trek duration and scenic campsites, Kedarkantha fits perfectly into a 5-day itinerary.
The trek begins from Sankri, a picturesque village surrounded by dense forests and mountain views. From Sankri, the trail ascends gradually through pine and oak forests towards Juda Ka Talab, a serene high-altitude lake often frozen in winter.
The next campsite lies at Kedarkantha Base, an open snowfield offering stunning sunset views. From here, trekkers attempt the summit early in the morning, walking through snow-covered slopes and ridges.
The summit climb is the highlight of the trek, rewarding trekkers with panoramic views of Himalayan peaks before descending back to base camp.
Standing at 12,500 ft, the Kedarkantha summit offers one of the best 360-degree views among beginner treks. On clear days, trekkers can spot Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Black Peak, and distant Himalayan ranges stretching across the horizon.
The summit experience is calm and powerful, especially during winter when everything around is covered in snow. Reaching the top gives a strong sense of accomplishment, especially for first-time Himalayan trekkers.
